This is a beautifully tailored midi skirt with generous pockets. The waistband is shaped to fit the waist comfortably and features a shell button chosen to reflect the teal colour of the skirt. The organic cotton canvas is medium-to-heavy weight. The inner panel is individually hand screen-printed with a dark blue pattern depicting Stephen Wolfram's rule 30 cellular automata. The state (on or off) of the neighbour square cells immediately adjacent any one cell controls the fate of that cell in its subsequent configuration. The surprising thing about rule 30 is that, despite being simple in its construction, pattern complexity quickly emerges (left to right). Cellular automata have been shown to be remarkably good predictors within the fields of physics (to model fluid dynamics), biology (to explain certain natural phenomena, such as the patterns observed on the marine gastropod mollusk Conus Textile), anthropology (to model the formation of societies) and computer science (to generate pseudo random numbers or design error correction codes). Screen print created by Roger Crouch.
